Definitions--What's a "Watch"?

There are some really important things you need to know about tornadoes-- because they are really, really dangerous!  Every year people die in tornadoes, but if you keep your eyes and ears open-- you'll stay safe, just like me and my brother!

The Storm Bunnies' #1 Rule--> Safety First!!

ingredientsofthunderstorm.jpg

A thunderstorm happens when colder, more dense air pushes underneath warmer, moist air, creating condensation and cloud development.

The air then converges along a frontal boundary, forcing it to rise.

thunderstormhazards.jpg

As you can see, there are a lot of hazards from thunderstorms-- Hail, Lightning, Winds, Tornadoes and Flooding-- all kinds of bad stuff!

The best thing to do during bad weather is remember the 30-30 rule:  Don't do anything 30 minutes, before, or 30 minutes after severe weather!  So if you see a storm coming, or when you hear that first rumble of thunder-- GET INSIDE!!  Just make sure Mom and Dad know where you are!

As you can (hopefully) see from this above picture-- Michigan only gets 2, 3 or 4 days a year when we get wind gusts that can knock you off your feet!  Doesn't happen very often here!

thunderstormlifecycle.jpg

As you can see here, there are 3 stages of a thunderstorm-- Cumulus (where it is building up and getting stronger), Mature (where it is as strong as it's going to get!), and Dissipating (where all the rain comes out of it, and empties itself out so that it starts disapearing!).

Severe thunderstorms?  There isn't too much to say other than they are dangerous!  However, if you are smart-- you will be safe.  If you see cloud shapes that look like this-- STAY INSIDE!!!!

This video shows some of the intake winds during a SEVERE thunderstorm!  Look and listen to how hard the wind is blowing!  Do you see that grass type of stuff?  It's about 2 feet high and it looks like water instead of grass!!  That's a strong storm-- I sure hope he's inside of a car!!!

(In case video does not work:)
